What are Easter holidays?

Easter is the celebration of Jesus' resurrection from the grave on the third day after his crucifixion. Easter is the fulfilled prophecy of the Messiah who would be persecuted, die for our sins and be resurrected on the third day. (Isaiah 53). Remembering Jesus' resurrection is a way to renew daily hope of victory over sin. According to the New Testament, Easter is three days after Jesus died on the cross.

When did Easter start?

The early Christians celebrated the resurrection on Nisan 14 (our March-April), the day of the Jewish Passover. The Jewish days were counted from eve to eve, so Jesus had celebrated his last supper on the eve of Passover and was crucified on the day of Passover. Early Christians who celebrated Passover worshiped Jesus as the Passover Lamb and the Redeemer.

Some of the Gentile Christians began to celebrate Easter the next Sunday for Passover, since Jesus was actually resurrected on a Sunday. This was especially the case in the western part of the Roman Empire. In Rome itself, different communities celebrated Easter on different days!
